'What we recruited for' - Everything Grant McCann said about Doncaster Rovers' performance against Sheffield Wednesday

Grant McCann shares his assessment of Doncaster Rovers’ performance against Sheffield Wednesday

Doncaster Rovers boss Grant McCann continued his 100% win record against Sheffield Wednesday by guiding his side to a well deserved 2-0 victory at the Club Doncaster Sports Village.

A brace from captain fantastic Owen Bailey helped Rovers secure their third league victory of the season so far. The skipper scored his first after finding space in the box from a corner after just six minutes and doubled his side’s advantage just 10 minutes later after getting on the end of a fine cross from midfielder Isaac Hutchinson.

The win takes Rovers up to 17th in the table as the South Yorkshire side look to build momentum heading into trips to face Luton Town and MK Dons later this month.

Here’s everything McCann had to say about Doncaster’s performance as the team made a return to winning ways.

Grant McCann heaped praise on Doncaster Rovers duo Jack Senior and Jamie Sterry. The pair, who is in his words are amongst the best full-backs in the division, both went straight back into the lineup after returning from injury and made a real positive impression.

He said: “I think they showed today what I think of them. I said to everyone during the week, that in my opinion they are two of the best full-backs in the division they showed that today. Really calm, really controlled, good on the ball, played with intensity, played with aggression. We knew that Jamie would probably last 60-65 minutes because he's not done a lot.

“He hasn't played many games this season. Jack, on the other hand, has. So we always planned a substitution at that point, really, without really going there and George coming on. But, yeah, I was really pleased that both played.”

McCann also hailed the performance of goalscorer Owen Bailey, who deservedly won the Man of the Match award, he added: “Bailey’s a top, top player. Probably could have had a hat-trick today. Their goalkeeper’s made a great save.

“That’s the Owen Bailey we know. He was winning his headers, tackles. He was running off people. So it was nice to see.“

For the first time in a while, Rovers lined up with a 4231 formation. A system that fans became accustomed to last season, but haven’t seen much this term due to the injury situation.

“It's what we recruited for. We know that we can go to a three if we need or we're chasing a game or whatever,” McCann said.

“We brought wide players into the football club. We had to leave one of them off the bench today. He was possibly ready, but we were just giving a little bit more time in Jordan Thomas.

“So, yeah, it was nice. We just want to try and keep people back fit now.

“You've seen the substitutions coming on. Brandon, Alfie, George, Bailey, Tommy all making impacts when they come off the bench.

“We haven't had tha this season. When you've got ten players missing, it's difficult sometimes. But it was nice today. “
