Defender Neill Byrne reflects on a disappointing afternoon for Doncaster Rovers at AFC Wimbledon

Doncaster Rovers defender Neill Byrne says he is confident that the group have more than enough quality to bounce back and start climbing the League One table in the weeks and months to come despite their poor run of results.

Byrne was part of the Rovers team that fell to a disappointing 1-0 defeat to AFC Wimbledon. The loss saw the team drop down to the bottom of the league table.

Rovers are winless in their opening six league matches and are currently one of just two teams in the division that are yet to taste the feeling of victory this season.

Commenting on the defeat to Wimbledon, Byrne said: “It’s really frustrating. We feel like we played some really good football at times. We created lots of chances we defended well. We’ve done everything we came here to do. We’re just missing the big thing of putting the ball in the back of the net and that’s frustrating.”

Doncaster Rovers dominated the game in terms of possession with 60% while they also recorded a combined total of 22 shots at goal with nine hitting the target as former Vikings shotstopper Josef Bursik impressed for the host. The Rovers backline on the whole was pretty solid with the only goal of the game coming from a long distance free-kick from Myles Hippolyte.

Reflecting on the team’s defensive display, Byrne added: “Until maybe the last 10 minutes or something, I don’t think they had too many chances to score. We came here and actually did well but unfortunately it’s not falling for us. And I know its easy to say that it comes with hard work.

“And I feel like we are showing that. We’re doing everything we can and if we keep playing like that, it will change.

“You look at the firepower in our team all over the pitch. We know that goals will come and once it does come, it will come in abundance.”
