‘ Little bit of luck’ - AFC Wimbledon boss Johnnie Jackson reacts to Doncaster Rovers win

Doncaster Rovers dropped to the bottom of the table after suffering a 1-0 defeat to AFC Wimbledon in the capital

AFC Wimbledon boss Johnnie Jackson admits his side needed a bit of luck to overcome Doncaster Rovers in a narrow 1-0 victory at the Cherry Red Records Stadium.

Reflecting on the game as a whole, Jackson told the club website: “Yeah, good win, [such a] tough game. I'm exhausted just watching it from the side, so God knows how the boys feel, the way that they've had to dig in, the effort they've had to go to.

“To see it through, forced into some changes, it looked a little bit different to how we had in mind. Losing [James] Tilley on Monday, losing Sweens [Dan Sweeney] this week in training, Steve Sessegnon, guys that played really well Monday night.

“So we've had to make changes and it was a bit disjointed, to be honest. We certainly weren't at our best, but that can happen in football, but then you need the lads to just dig in, bite down, put bodies on the line, run, and just give absolutely everything, which is what they've done.”

The Wombles victory takes them up to seventh in the league table, but it could have very easily been a different outcome, with the hosts having to absorb lots of pressure throughout the game, particularly in the first-half when the likes of Jack Senior and Alfie May both went close to scoring.

Rovers also thought they’d opened the scoring after 19 minutes when Owen Bailey’s strike was controversially disallowed.

Reflecting on those moments, Jackson added: “We've had a little bit of luck along the way, there's no getting away from it. Donny will probably think that they should be leaving here, at least with something, and that's fair enough.

“But the real one moment of quality in the game is Myles' free kick, and that's been the major difference.”

The result leaves Doncaster Rovers winless afters six matches and languishing at the bottom of the league table.

Rovers face McCann’s former club Peterborough United at London Road in their next league outing.
