'They're angry' - Everything Grant McCann said about Doncaster Rovers' performance against AFC Wimbledon

Doncaster Rovers dropped to the bottom of the League One table after suffering a 1-0 defeat against AFC Wimbledon

Doncaster Rovers’ difficult start to the season continued when they fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat against AFC Wimbledon at the Cherry Red Records Stadium.

Grant McCann made four changes from the team that were by Plymouth Argyle with Leon Ayinde, Matty Pearson, James Husband and George Broadbent all coming into the starting lineup.

Rovers were the stronger of the two sides in the first half and squandered a series of opportunities to open the scoring before falling behind through a wonderfully taken free-kick from Myles Hippolyte.

However, the major talking point of the first-half was Owen Bailey’s disallowed goal after 19 minutes which the referee appeared to not give due to an offside decision. This left McCann hugely frustrated as he reflected back on another match for his side which could well have been very different if his Rovers team were more clinical in front of goal.

“It was a good performance but nobody wants to hear that. People want to see whether we've won, drawn or if we've lost. When we've made the opportunities we've created here today, we should at least have two, maybe three goals. We don't, it just feels like at this moment in time we're not taking the chances in the moments when were on top. We've had numerous opportunities to score, but at this moment in time it's coming off our heel. I feel like I've got the best number nine in the league in Alfie May.

“Isaac Hutchinson also scored 20 goals last year. Owen Bailey got 16 last season. At this moment in time, everything just seems to be rushed. Maybe trying too hard sometimes and it becomes rushed. But from a performance point of view, to come to Wimbledon and control the game is pleasing. But, like I say, we're having a little bit of a hard time.

“The second half became a little bit more, I would say, even. I didn’t feel we were on top of it, but we've got to score. We had so many opportunities in the second half. My job really is to put the team in a position to create chances.

“The players are not doing it on purpose. No-one's trying to miss a chance on purpose. They're really angry, but the more we do that, the more chances we have to score. It's really frustrating.

McCann was later asked about Bailey’s disallowed goal in the early stages of the match. He said: “We’ve watched it back, he’s not offside. We don’t seem to be getting an sort of rub of the green, it’s just not going our way.

“I’ve been in football long enough to know that it changes. Hopefully quicker rather than later. But at this moment in time, we’re probably creating our own problems by not taking chances.”
