Sprotbrough's Beth Dobbin crowned 200m British champion

Sprotbrough sprinter Beth Dobbin is the new national 200m champion after setting a new record at the British Athletics Championships in Birmingham.

The 24-year-old’s time of 22.59s was a new championship record and saw her edge to victory over Bianca Williams in a tight final, setting a new Scottish record in the process.

Dobbin represents Scotland, for whom she qualifies thanks to her dad Jim, the former Doncaster Rovers, Barnsley and Rotherham United midfielder.

She twice set a new Scottish record and personal best on Sunday, after winning he heat in 22.75 before shaving a further 16-hundreths of a second off it in the final.

Her performance was enough to secure qualification for the European Athletics Championships in Glasgow in August.

And she was lost for words afterwards.

“I can’t even explain how much this means,” Dobbin told BBC Sport.

“It has been such a stressful week.

“I knew if I ran a good race I could do it.

“I believed in myself but just to do it is crazy.

“It is overwhelming. I am just so pleased.”

Dobbin began her athletics career with at Doncaster Athletic Club before switching to Loughborough University.

She now represents Edinburgh AC.
