''It’s not about ripping up your plan' - Why Doncaster Rovers boss Grant McCann isn't panicking just yet

Boss Grant McCann insists Doncaster Rovers will stick to the long-term game plan as they bid to turn their season around.

Faltering Rovers are looking to snap a ten game winless streak in League One when they host McCann’s former club Peterborough United at the weekend.

Grant McCann is staying calm about the slump in form for Doncaster Rovers.

And McCann, who made 160 appearances for Posh during a five season spell, believes there is no reason to panic at the downturn in form.

“I have been here many times in my career where you go through sticky spells and what I have learned is it’s not about ripping up your whole plan and starting again. It’s about believing in what we set out to do when we first arrived at the football club.

“We have got a plan that we want to stick to and a way of playing that we like to stick to. We have recruited these players and we give them the belief and trust that it will come good, and it has over the last couple of seasons.

“We are not panicking. No-one wants to be the best form team in November. We saw it last season with one or two teams, it's what you do at the end of the season that counts.

“It is a long season and there’s a lot of games still to be played. Our focus is just concentrating on us and turning the tide in our favour.”

McCann, who had two spells as manager at London Road, has been left content with how the League One newcomers have been performing but knows Rovers must tighten up to ensure the margins go their way.

“In our last three games we have beaten Bradford with a good performance, albeit in the Vertu Trophy,” he said.

“We have gone to Lincoln and should have easily got a point there and we have gone to Stevenage and should have won.

“That's three teams in the top six, so we know we are capable and we are hoping a win is just around the corner.

“We are creating chances, we are one of the best in the division at that. It's just about calmness and finding the finishing touches.

“Over the last 5-6 games I have been really pleased with the performance levels of the team, we just need to turn it into wins.

“The more opportunities we get the more likely it is that we will score so, we have to beat that sort of drum, play the way we want to play and things will turn.

“You don’t go through any season without having a blip in the league. We just have to take the positives and focus on what we are doing well and trying to move forward.”

Rovers started life in League One in fine form following last season’s promotion and occupied a play-off place after the opening eight games.

And, despite Rovers being just three points above the drop zone, it is a place which McCann has not given up on just yet.

“The home games are really important and we need to start turning tight games in our favour, particularly home games,” he added

“The division is so tight. If we can put one or two wins together it puts us within touching distance of the top six again. It’s so close, but it’s November and it’s about being in the mix come February or March and that’s where we want to be

“There’s nobody who has been ultra consistent and anybody can beat anybody on the day. We still have aspirations. I know people might think I am blindsided or laugh at me, we know we have been through spells like this before and we know what the division is about.

“At this moment in time it's about trying to continue with the momentum of our performances and turning those performances into wins.”
