£2.5m will be used to replace 2.9km of clean water main in Scawthorpe while £468k will renew 1.7km of water mains at Finningley.
Contract partner, M Group has already started the renewal scheme at Scawthorpe and will start on site at Finningley from Monday 12 November.
Both schemes will replace sections of the ageing clean water network with new robust and resilient pipes to improve supply and reduce the number of bursts and leaks in the area.
Jason Farrar, project manager at Yorkshire Water, said: "This upgrade of almost 5km of water mains should significantly reduce interruptions in supply for our customers, which have been given high-priority upgrade status because of repeated failures in the past.

"We're working with local highways to keep disruption to a minimum and the majority of the work will be under temporary traffic management.
“Both schemes are part of Yorkshire Water's £406m investment to replace over 1,000km of clean water mains across the region between 2025-2030."
Yorkshire Water is in contact with local residents and businesses to keep them up to date with progress or possible disruptions.
