Grant McCann reveals transfer-listed Doncaster Rovers man asked for move in January

Transfer-listed Doncaster Rovers winger Glenn Middleton originally asked to leave the club in January, manager Grant McCann has revealed.

Last week saw Rovers release details of their retained list, as well as confirming that Scottish wideman Middleton had been made available for transfer. The 26-year-old only joined Rovers last summer but now appears to be on his way out of the club.

Speaking to the local media in a lengthy post-season debrief, McCann said of Middleton: "Glenn's still got a year left on his contract. The conversation I had with him was me saying 'I can't see you playing the games you want to play next year' and so for that reason we placed him on the transfer list and spoke to his agent.

"He asked to leave in January, to go out on loan then, and these are things you think back on. But we weren't in any sort of position to let him go then.

"If Glenn comes back for pre-season he'll be treated no differently to any other player. He knows he'll have another couple of wide players fighting for that position so we'll see.

"I think Glenn's time down here has been a little bit up and down. There's games where he's been good and games where we've not seen enough of him. We know he's a good player and is at a good age and I'm sure he'll be on a lot of lists for the summer."

Rovers ended the campaign in 14th place thanks to a final day, Billy Sharp-inspired win away at Peterborough.
