‘A good team’ - What Huddersfield Town boss Martin Drury had to say about his side’s win over Doncaster Rovers

Huddersfield boss Martin Drury was delighted to his side’s performance as they came from behind to beat Doncaster Rovers

Huddersfield Town boss Martin Drury described Doncaster Rovers as a good team in his post-match interview as he shared his take on how the match unfolded.

Rovers took the lead in the first half through Leon Ayinde’s cool strike from close range and took the initiative for stages of the second half before falling victim to three quick fire goals from a Terriers side that were able to turn the tables and secure a 3-1 win on the night.

Drury, now aged 40, was a youth-team scholar at Doncaster Rovers under Dave Penney and signed his first professional contract in 2003. While at Rovers he played alongside current first team coach Paul Green, although he never made a first team appearance for the club.

Here’s what he had to say after the game.

“I'm really pleased for the players that they were able to to get minutes and play the game they love. I've had to disappoint them recently to tell them they're not starting or they're not in the squad.

“So, the overriding feeling for me is I'm I'm really pleased for them because they deserve to be playing football.

“Their mentalities every day in training have been exceptional. I liked that we had to suffer a little bit in the game. We had some really good moments, but we had to suffer in some parts of the game.”

“I love the mentality of the group, the way we came back again and finished the game really, really strongly again. And that's becoming a theme now and becoming a habit and I want that to continue for the future. We had many players on the pitch that needed the minutes. We had young players coming onto the pitch as did Doncaster. So a fantastic tournament and platform for us to give experience to certain people and use the game for whatever we wanted to do. And full credit to the players tonight for how they went about it.”

Drury went on to explain that he felt his side were slightly over eager in their press during the first half, in a move which allowed Rovers to go long on occasion.

He added: “We just got a little bit too excited, committed too many men forwards. Doncaster started recognizing that going a little bit longer and when they did, they had more bodies to land on things. So that was the main thing of the first half around that.

“The game was was a bit of a roller coaster because Doncaster are such a good team so for us to go one nil down and again come back second half and have that relentless nature about us no excuses and stay really together stay united to the end is testament to the players it's it's all for them and and credit to them six games unbeaten we look to make that seven on Saturday at Mansfield.”

The result leaves Huddersfield top of Group H and in the driving seat. Meanwhile, Doncaster are bottom but still have a chance to make amends against Liverpool Under-21s at home and Rochdale away later in the competition.

Rovers reached the semi-final stage last term and last won the competition 20 seasons ago in the 2006/07 campaign.
