Council apologises after roadworks cause traffic chaos as St Leger nears
The works are taking place near to Doncaster Racecourse
City of Doncaster Council has apologised for emergency roadworks near to Doncaster Racecourse as the St Leger nears, which have caused massive disruption and traffic jams for motorists.
Drivers have complained of lengthy tailbacks on Bawtry Road near to the Town Moor course with lanes closed due to construction work taking place.
A City of Doncaster Council spokesperson said: “Unfortunately, emergency road works were necessary this morning following a collision in the Bennetthorpe area.
“We understand that the unplanned lane closures associated with this have caused significant disruption for motorists today and apologise for any inconvenience caused.
“At the time of writing, the works are still ongoing but are expected to be finished within the next 24 hours.
“We appreciate residents’ patience during this time and hope to have the situation resolved soon.”
The works saw traffic backing up with lengthy queues at rush hour, with AA road traffic maps showing traffic jams snaking back along Bawtry Road deep into Bessacarr.
One driver said: “Traffic lanes are closed in the morning peak whenpeople go to work and schools.
“The traffic jams are terrible - just after 8 o'clock it was armageddon.”
