Doncaster Sheffield Airport purchase now waiting on Peel Group go-ahead, Mayor Coppard says

”We’ve been able to take potential ownership of the airport, subject to the decision by Peel in a couple of weeks’ time.”

The freehold purchase of Doncaster Sheffield Airport by the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) now rests on a ‘decision by Peel’, Mayor Oliver Coppard has revealed.

After he and other local leaders approved the SYMCA’s intention to purchase the airport (DSA) from the Peel Group, Mayor Coppard revealed there was still one more hurdle to come, which is outside of local authority hands.

Discussing the previous leasehold agreement between the City of Doncaster Council and Peel, the Mayor said: “If it wasn’t for that lease signed by Doncaster Council we wouldn’t have got to the stage we’re at today… where we were able to engage in a process that led us to this point today where we’ve been able to take potential ownership of the airport, subject to the decision by Peel in a couple of weeks’ time.”

When plans to purchase DSA were announced on Monday, October 19, 2026, both Mayor Coppard and the Mayor of Doncaster Ros Jones suggested the deal was done and dusted and would be signed once it was approved by the SYMCA Board the following week.

However, Mr Coppard suggested negotiations with Peel over the sale are still ongoing during the SYMCA Board meeting on Tuesday.

The Peel Group did not respond to requests for comment on their approaching decision.

Political leaders have committed to sharing details on the finances of the purchase deal once it has been finalised and signed.
