Former Doncaster Rovers caretaker boss sacked 17 months after winning promotion
Andy Butler has been sacked by Scunthorpe United after a poor start to the National League season
Former Doncaster Rovers caretaker boss Andy Butler has been sacked from his position as manager of Scunthorpe United after just under two and half years in charge.
The tough-tackling defender, who also played more than 200 matches for Rovers during his playing days, was relieved of his duties following a demolarising 4-1 defeat against Tamworth on Tuesday evening.
Butler, who only managed four wins from 18 matches as caretaker manager over Rovers back in 2021, leaves the Iron five points adrift of safety after a disappointing start to the season in the National League.

Scunthorpe currently find themselves in 22nd position and have been beaten in six of their last seven league outings.
It's a far cry from the results and performances fans had previously become accustomed to under Butler following his arrival as first team manager which initially brought great success.
Butler, who also managed the Doncaster Belles, took charge of Scunthorpe in May 2024, and in his first full season in charge led the club to promotion via the National League North play-offs, notably beating Chester in the play-off final.
In his second season, he continued to exceed expectations with the Glanford Park outfit. Notably leading them to a commendable fifth place finish in their first season back in the division while only narrowly missing out on a trip to Wembley after falling short against Rochdale in the play-off semi-final.
A club statement reads: “Following a meeting of the Board of Directors this morning, Scunthorpe United can confirm first team manager Andy Butler has been relieved of his duties.
“Andy departs with our gratitude for his fantastic commitment, work rate and dedication during his whole time at Scunthorpe United, of which we undoubtedly know he gave his all. We wholeheartedly wish Andy the very best for the future, and look forward to watching him continue to grow and flourish in the game wherever it takes him next.
“The club will be making no further comment at this time and further details will be provided in due course.”
