Leger 250: Race 'at heart' of British sporting tradition, says Doncaster MP
The Doncaster Labour MP says the race is a key part of the city’s history and heritage
A Doncaster MP has praised the importance of the city’s St Leger meeting as this year’s historic 250th anniversary meeting gets under way.
Labour Doncaster Central MP Sally Jameson says this year’s race offers “a generational opportunity” and described the race as “a cornerstone of British racing.”
She said: “As Doncaster prepares to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the St Leger, the city has an opportunity to reflect on its place at the heart of one of Britain's most historic sporting traditions.
“Horseracing has been part of Doncaster's story for more than four centuries, and since 1776, Doncaster Racecourse has been home to the St Leger, making it one of the oldest and most iconic races in the UK and around the horseracing world.
“As MP for Doncaster Central, I am proud of our racecourse and our racing history.
“The fact that the St Leger was first run during the reign of George III and in the same year the United States of America was founded speaks volumes about its significance and appeal.
“It has also remained relevant to modern racegoers, securing its place as a cornerstone of British horseracing and a defining feature of our national sporting calendar.
“From the first winner in 1776 (Allabaculia) to the last winner of the Triple Crown in 1970 (Nijinsky), visits from Prime Ministers and royalty, the St Leger honours centuries of heritage.
“Whilst the St Leger is the most prestigious race held in Doncaster, the city also hosts the start of the flat horseracing season in March with The Lincoln, and marks the end of the season in November with the Futurity Trophy.
“The importance of the St Leger and horseracing extends far beyond the racecourse.
“Building up to the St Leger, the city centre economy is bustling as hotels, pubs, restaurants and shops prepare to welcome racegoers to Doncaster.
“Racing helps support our local businesses, hospitality and nightlife making the St Leger festival and Doncaster Racecourse important economic assets as well as sporting occasions.
“For anyone who has never experienced the St Leger before, the 250th anniversary offers a generational opportunity to be part of the most iconic race in the country.
“I hope everyone who attends has a fantastic day and best of luck for your bets!”
