The Doncaster Rovers boss felt his players did exactly that in the Carabao Cup defeat to Blackpool.

And he will not stand for it.

“I said to the lads afterwards that one thing I will never do is have a pop at anybody losing the ball,” he said.

“But I will do if you’re hiding from it.

“I felt we had a few hiding from the ball on Tuesday night.

“And there were too many times the ball came into us and we’d pick an easy option, pass it to the full back instead of trying to put someone in.

“I described it as ‘safe’ and it was disappointing to say that because they know I’m not. I’m anything but that.”

McCann said he had no regrets about resting his key players during the week and said Rovers’ priority remains a promotion push.

His team face a tough trip to early League One leaders Peterborough United this weekend - McCann’s first visit back to London Road since being sacked by the Posh in February.

“I’m looking forward to going back there,” he said.

“It’s just another game really.

“We want to go there and do ourselves proud and play the way we can.

“If I look at the seven games as a whole this season we’ve had one bad performance. We’ve done okay in the league.”
