Bakery giant Cooplands opens new Doncaster city centre store

The Scarborough firm is separate to the Doncaster company of the same name

Bakery giant Cooplands has opened its third Doncaster branch - after a firm with the same name moved in to take over the city’s stores.

Cooplands of Scarborough has taken over branches previously run by Cooplands of Doncaster. Despite the name, the two firms are separate businesses.

The North Yorkshire firm has already re-opened branches in Armthorpe and the Frenchgate centre after the Doncaster chain ran into financial difficulties and has now opened a store in Baxtergate.

A spokesperson said: “Our third Doncaster shop has officially opened its doors.

“Whether you’re grabbing breakfast, picking up lunch or treating yourself to something sweet, we’re ready and waiting with all your Cooplands favourites. 56 Market Place, Doncaster

“Come down, say hello and check out our brand-new shop.”

Cooplands Bakery started life in a small pork butcher and pie shop in Scarborough in 1885 and over the decades has grown in size, scope and ambition to the point that it grew to 160 shops all over Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and the North East.

Cooplands of Doncaster was set up in 1932 - with the same names often confusing customers.

Based in Wheatley, the Doncaster firm has suffered a number of troubles including financial problems and shop closures, with staff going unpaid.

The firm also went into administration in 2015, with scores of jobs lost and stores closed, along with its bakery in Wharf Road.

In 2016, the firm went bust for a second time with administrators once again being called in to one of Doncaster’s biggest and best known firms.
