'Blame is on me' - Grant McCann's reaction to dismal Doncaster Rovers defeat at MK Dons

Grant McCann took full responsbility for his side’s 6-1 defeat to MK Dons despite a number of hugely disappointing individual displays

Doncaster Rovers boss Grant McCann says he takes the blame for the team’s dismal 6-1 defeat to newly promoted MK Dons.

Aaron Collins scored four goals for the hosts in a miserable afternoon for Doncaster Rovers, who were unable to ever really find a resolution to the striker and a number of his impressive teammates, who seemed to win just about every duel against a hapless Rovers defence.

Doncaster Rovers, perhaps shellshocked from that point onwards, leaked further goals throughCallum Paterson and Marvin Ekpiteta as MK continued to pile on further misery to the faces of more than 700 away supporters, who had travelled well over 100 miles to cheer on their team.

When asked to share his assessment of an awful afternoon in Buckinghamshire, McCann said: “We were really disappointing. I take full responsibility. As you said, an early goal set the tone for a difficult afternoon. When you don't get it right, you can get hurt in this league. That's what’s happened today.”

McCann set up with a 4231 formation for the third game in a row but saw nowehere near the same standards as his team had reached during the 2-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday just seven days earlier.

He made three changes from the team that lost in midweek against Luton Town and saw little impact from either Alfie May or George Broadbent, two players substituted in the opening hour, , but did at least see positives from Jordan Thomas, who claimed his first goal in an otherwise horrendous afternoon.

McCann was keen to protect his players and continued: “At the end of the day, I've brought these players to the football club. I've recruited this group. Nearly every single one of them are my players. In fact, all of them. So that responsibility lies with me.

He went on to express his frustration at the team’s lack of bravery.

“We weren’t brave enough on the ball. We didn’t look nowhere near what we can do. It’s a team thats unrecognisable from the one that beat Sheffield Wednesday for example.”

The result sees Rovers drop to 19th in the League One table - just two points above Wigan Athletic on the relegation zone.
