Doncaster Scout group celebrates first beaver colony since pandemic

The 58th Doncaster Scout Group is celebrating a major milestone this month with the official launch of a brand-new Beaver Colony — the first new section to open in the Doncaster Danum District since the Covid-19 pandemic.

The new colony, which welcomed 24 young people aged 6 to 8, is the second Beaver section at the thriving Bessacarr-based group and marks a significant step forward in the district’s post-pandemic recovery.

Demand for places at the 58th has continued to rise over recent years, with more families wanting their children to experience the fun, adventure and skills for life that Scouting provides.

The creation of a second Beaver Colony now gives more young people the chance to start their journey earlier and progress through Cubs, Scouts and Explorers with confidence and continuity.

Group Lead Volunteer David Plant said the launch highlights both the strength of the group and renewed optimism for Scouting across Doncaster.

“This is the first new section to open anywhere in the Doncaster Danum District since Covid, and it shows just how much appetite there is for Scouting in our community. Families want their children to experience something positive, active and social — and we’re incredibly proud to be in a position to give 24 more young people that opportunity.”

The new colony is led by a dedicated team of new volunteers — Ethan Hymans, Chloe Glenton, Sammi Hibbard and Caroline Freier — supported and guided by Stephanie Plant, the Group Beaver Team Leader.

Stephanie works tirelessly to manage both Beaver Colonies, ensuring every young person receives a high-quality, fun and engaging programme shaped by their interests.

In their first sessions, the new Beavers have already taken part in team games, creative challenges and outdoor activities, with plenty more planned over the coming months.

The growth of the 58th Doncaster mirrors a wider effort within the Doncaster Danum District to rebuild capacity, open new provision and offer more young people a place to belong. District leaders have praised the 58th for showing what is possible when volunteer recruitment, strong leadership and programme quality come together.

David added: “We’re incredibly grateful to our volunteers who stepped forward to make this possible. Opening a second Beaver Colony has been a long-term ambition, and seeing 24 excited young people in uniform at their first meeting was a brilliant moment for everyone involved.”

The 58th Doncaster Scout Group continues to welcome enquiries from adults who want to volunteer, whether weekly or occasionally. Roles are flexible, rewarding and suitable for a wide range of skills and schedules.
