MP gives update on Doncaster road continually hit by flooding

The road is repeatedly hit by flooding when river levels rise

A Doncaster MP has given an update to constituents on a Doncaster Road which has been repeatedly hit by flooding.

Pastures Road in Mexborough often has to be closed when waters from the nearby River Dearne pour onto the carrigeway, often making it impassible for days at a time.

Now Doncaster North MP Ed Miliband has stepped in and said: “I know many residents in Mexborough and the surrounding area have been waiting for news, and that the wait has been frustrating.

“I’ve been in contact with the Environment Agency, and in their October update, they’ve told us the following.

“In good news, the design of the replacement penstocks is finished, the order has been placed with a specialist manufacturer, and the necessary permits and ground investigation work are complete.

“Delivery is expected between the end of November and early December, with phased delivery planned so installation doesn’t have to wait for all four to arrive.

“Unfortunately, the EA have said that this has taken longer than it should have, and there’s still no date for the installation itself.

“The Environment Agency is now appointing a contractor, and only once that’s done will they be able to confirm a programme for removing the old penstocks and fitting the new ones.

“In the meantime, the penstocks remain secured in the open position.

“That’s the safest arrangement for now, but it means Pastures Road is more vulnerable to flooding when river levels are high.

“That means closures, disruption and longer diversions for residents, businesses and farmers. I know how much that matters locally, and the feelings associated.

“The Environment Agency has said it will keep monitoring conditions closely through autumn and winter and will work with Doncaster Council to manage the impact of any closures.

“I’ll keep pushing for the works to be done at the earliest opportunity, and I’ll share more as soon as there’s a confirmed timetable.”
