The 8ft 6in stone slab, that was unveiled in a Hastings car park in the run-up to last year's election, cost the Labour Party some £8,000, according to reports released this week.

The true cost of the plinth, which for many became a symbol of the party's crushing defeat, emerged yesterday when the enormous carved rock was accidentally left off a declaration of party spending in the run-up to the election.

The omission caused the Ed stone to be thrust into the spotlight once again.

A party spokesman commented: "Due to an administrative error these invoices were not included with other items of the campaign spend.

"We have informed the Electoral Commission and will seek to rectify this error as soon as possible."

Following Mr Miliband's failed bid to become Prime Minister, teams of national journalists were tasked with finding the so-called Ed Stone, however it has now been suggested by Labour Party insiders that the plinth was destroyed shortly after the election.
