Balby care home resident enjoys milestone seaside holiday to Mablethorpe

Care home resident enjoys joyful trip to the seaside.

Lauren, who lives at Quarryfields care home in Balby, has enjoyed her first holiday since moving to the home, taking a trip to Mablethorpe with support from colleagues.

Quarryfields, on Woodfield Road, is an Exemplar Health Care home which supports adults living with learning disabilities, autism and complex mental health needs.

Lauren moved to Quarryfields in August 2025. Her mental health had previously made it difficult for her to go away, so the trip marked an important step in getting back to doing things that bring her joy.

The Home Manager, Clinical Nurse Manager and the Activities Team helped plan the holiday, suggesting destinations where they have previously supported people to go away.

Lauren chose Mablethorpe, and colleagues involved her throughout the hotel booking process, asking for her views and preferences.

In Mablethorpe, Lauren spent time on the beach and went on walks around the town, stopping to chat with people walking their dogs.

She tried different pubs for food, which she said was delicious, and visited local charity shops, something with a personal connection to her as she has been volunteering at Barnardo's in Balby for seven months.

She also collected more than 1,000 tickets in the arcades and spent evenings relaxing with jigsaw puzzles.

Reflecting on the trip, Lauren said “It was brilliant being able to go on holiday, I really enjoyed it.”

Speaking about her highlights, she said these were “going to the beach, relaxing, people watching and engaging with friendly people that were walking their dogs on the beach”.

After the success of her UK trip, Lauren has set her sights on travelling abroad, with Spain next on her list, and the team will support her to get there. Before then, she wants to focus on building positive relationships with others, so she can enjoy more activities and future trips.

Leah Dicken, Health Care Assistant at Quarryfields said: “Lauren really made the trip her own, from deciding what she wanted to do each day to choosing where to eat. It showed me how much she has achieved since moving to Quarryfields.”
