The war heroes will be celebrated in an event at the Corn Exchange

Doncaster’s wartime heroes are to be honoured with a special city centre ceremony and exhibition celebrating their bravery.

The Victoria Cross Trust has announced a special exhibition at the Corn Exchange to pay tribute to seven local men awarded Britain's highest military honuor for gallantry, the Victoria Cross.

The commemorative event will take place on Tuesday, 10 November from 10am to 4.45 pm.

Organised in partnership with the City of Doncaster Council, the event aims to keep the memory of these local heroes alive while raising vital funds for the charity.

The exhibition will spotligh seven ordinary Doncaster residents who displayed extraordinary bravery in the face of the enemy.

They are

  • George Harry Wyatt VC: A former police constable.
  • Gilbert Insall VC MC: A military pilot.
  • Laurence Calvert VC: A haulage hand in civilian life.
  • Thomas Norman Jackson VC: A locomotive engineer who was killed in action.
  • William Hackett VC: A tunneller who was killed in action.
  • John Harper VC: A peat digger who was killed in action.
  • Thomas Bryan VC: A local greengrocer.

There will be a chance to view Victoria Cross heritage, artefacts, and historical documentation and attendees can speak directly with local historians and groups dedicated to preserving Doncaster’s history.

Victoria Cross Trust Patron Rusty Firmin—an ex-SAS soldier who famously led a team into the Iranian Embassy to rescue hostages—will be in attendance.

He will be showcasing his new book, SAS Aftermath, alongside co-author Neil Thornton.

Remembrance-related merchandise will be available for purchase, with all donations going directly to the Trust's ongoing work.

The event is free of charge.
