Doncaster school recognised for excellence in developing pupils' communication skills

Pupils at Pennine View take part in dedicated weekly lessons where they develop the skills and strategies needed to become confident and effective communicators

Pennine View School, based on Old Road in Doncaster and part of Nexus Multi Academy Trust, has been recognised as a Voice 21 Oracy Centre of Excellence for its commitment to developing pupils' speaking and listening skills.

Voice 21 is the UK's leading oracy education charity.

Oracy refers to the ability to communicate effectively through speaking and listening.

Voice 21’s Oracy Centres of Excellence accreditation recognises schools that demonstrate outstanding practice in teaching speaking and listening skills and embedding a talk-rich culture across school life.

These skills are reinforced across the curriculum through structured talk and collaborative learning, giving pupils regular opportunities to take part in high-quality classroom discussions.

By placing talk at the heart of teaching and learning, the academy has developed a culture where pupils are encouraged to share their ideas and communicate with confidence.

Carl Cousins, Headteacher at Pennine View School, said:"We're delighted to be recognised as a Voice 21 Oracy Centre of Excellence.

“At Pennine View, oracy is the golden thread that runs through everything we do because we believe every pupil should have the confidence to express themselves and know that their voice matters.

"Whether it's through dedicated oracy lessons or our Pupil Parliament and assemblies, we create opportunities for pupils to share their ideas every day. This recognition reflects the culture we've built together and the commitment of both our staff and pupils."

Dr Kate Paradine, CEO of Voice 21, added: “The Voice 21 Oracy Centre of Excellence award certifies and celebrates schools that are changing the face of education.

“Pennine View School has demonstrated the quality of oracy education being provided across five areas of school life: their school’s vision, culture, curriculum, learning and impact on students.“This whole school approach is at the heart of what it means to offer high-quality oracy education, which will enable every child to use their voice to thrive in school, work and life.”
