Doncaster based children's author writes adventures based on his allotment
The whimsical tale follows Andy the Ant on his adventures.
Derek Steventon aged 69 was inspired to write his first children's book by his father who always encouraged him to read and write as a child.
It was not until 2016 that Derek sat down and finally created his first book ‘Andy the Ant Who Wants to Touch the Sky’.
The story follows a little ant with a very big dream — to reach up and touch the sky. It's a colourful adventure for readers aged five and upwards, and the book is now available on Amazon.
We spoke to Derek, who is from the city centre, he said: “After 26 years together, my partner and I have recently married. At 69, I find myself thinking more about the future and what I can leave behind for my wife and my two daughters.

“I'm not writing these books because I expect to become rich or famous. My hope is that the stories I've created will continue to bring enjoyment to readers long after I'm gone, while perhaps providing something financially for my family.
“Of course, I would dearly love to see people buying and enjoying my books during my lifetime too.”
Derek’s grandchildren love his books and he hopes parents in Doncaster will support him - the books would make a great Christmas gift this year.
The books are based around his family allotment and are full of colourful images of nature.

“I've already written further adventures for Andy the Ant, including Andy the Ant Lands on the Moon, which I'm preparing for publication, and Andy the Ant and the Terracotta Army, which I'm currently developing,” he said.
