There’s some clarity off the field at least – now Doncaster Rovers need to lift spirits on the pitch.

Rovers travel to Gillingham having won just one of their last nine games and at risk of dropping into the bottom half of the League Two table.

Head coach Danny Schofield effectively received a vote of confidence yesterday when chairman David Blunt confirmed in a statement that he will remain in charge for next season.

And there was a much-needed statement of intent from owner Terry Bramall who has vowed to boost next season’s playing budget in a bid to push for promotion – although the announcement was met with a degree of scepticism from some supporters.

New investment has certainly been instrumental in Gillingham pulling away from relegation danger. The Gills, who now lie 19th in the table, could move to within four points of Rovers with a victory today.

No changes from Rovers at the break.

Rovers’ much-changed side can consider themselves slightly unfortunate to be behind.

They recovered from a tricky start and grew into the game - and went close to taking the lead through Close and Nelson.

But ultimately they have failed to deal with a long throw and find themselves trailing at the break.

Nelson with an important block as the Gills threaten to double their advantage.

A long throw from the left is flicked on and Nichols volleys home.

That goal has come out of nowhere, really.

Long stoppage in play for an injury to Masterson.

Molyneux’s corner drops to Nelson whose header is cleared off the line onto the underside of the bar. Unlucky.

Midway through the first half and the game’s gone a bit scrappy.

Rovers have grown into this game after a shaky start. They’re starting to see more of the ball.

Close lets fly from the edge of the box and it’s deflected just wide.

Rovers coming under some pressure early on. The home side aren’t afraid to get the ball into the box.
