'I've seen everything' - Doncaster Rovers boss Grant McCann prepares for big milestone

Grant McCann brings up a big milestone this weekend.

The Northern Irishman will preside over his 500th game as a manager when Doncaster Rovers host Wigan Athletic on Saturday.

McCann, 45, is in his second spell at Rovers and has enjoyed plenty of success across both periods in the dugout in South Yorkshire. His three previous full campaigns have seen Rovers qualify for the play-offs twice and win the League Two title, last season. McCann has also lifted the League One crown whilst boss at Hull City but has also experienced the other side of the coin, being relegated with the Tigers. In addition, he has also been at the helm of Peterborough United on three separate occasions.

Speaking to the Free Press ahead of his landmark match against the Latics, McCann reflected: "To manage 500 games by the age of 45 tells me I've done something right.

"It's nine to ten years that I've been in management. Looking back at it, I've seen everything. Promotions, winning leagues, relegations, takeovers, embargoes - whatever it may be, I've seen it all!

"It's been an exciting ten years and a real journey and to get 500 games at this stage and at my age is good, so let's see if I can go and get to a thousand and join that club!

"But I think to get to that point you need to win. That's the beauty of management: you have to win to stay in a job and you have to win to get near that amount of games."

McCann was asked of any noticeable changes he's picked up on since presiding over his first game as a boss, way back in September 2015 as interim manager of Peterborough.

"I'm definitely more calmer," he added. "I think about things more and I'm probably not as reactionary as I was when I was a younger manager.

"As you get older and get a wee bit longer in this game it's hard to do everything anyway so it's important you delegate to staff certain things.

"I've witnessed everything you can probably witness as a manager but lots of positives. It's been enjoyable and I'm enjoying coming to work every day, still. That's the most pleasing thing and hopefully there's a lot more games to come."
