But how have the squad performed on an individual basis so far? Here, we have rated each player based on the first 23 league matches of the campaign. Only those with five or more appearances this term are included.
5. James Coppinger 6.5
It has not quite been the send-off season the Rovers legend would have wished for with only ten starts and one completed 90 minutes. But he has shown there is still plenty left in the tank - particularly with his brilliant performance off the bench against Bristol Rovers early in the season. He is currently working his way back to fitness and will be desperate to make a big impression in the final three months of his career. Photo: Bruce Rollinson
6. Madger Gomes 7
The Spanish midfielder made an unimaginable impact in the early weeks of the season as he emerged as an unlikely goalscorer, scoring in the first four matches. Though he has gone through spells where performances have been patchy, Gomes has emerged as a versatile player capable of featuring anywhere in the Rovers midfield. His progress was halted by a lengthy injury but he has looked bright since his return. Photo: Howard Roe/AHPIX LTD
7. Brad Halliday 8
He impressed in his first season at the club and Halliday has only gone from strength to strength in the first half of his second. It is fair to say the right back is one of the most important attacking threats in the Rovers side, often finding himself as the most advanced player, or positioning himself on the inside in the opposition half. His defensive abilities look to have developed too. Photo: Bruce Rollinson
8. Reece James 8.5
This season has been nothing less than remarkable for James and that is down to the incredible versatility that he has shown throughout. He has played in his ‘natural’ left back position only once in his last 16 matches, with midfield becoming more of his home. He initially played in the attacking three before dropping into the deeper-lying role where he has flourished. With neat and tidy play on the ball, the ability to disrupt the opposition, his excellent covering work and a penchant for popping up with a goal, James has been tremendous this term - and massively important for the side.
