'Perfect away performance' - Everything Grant McCann said about Doncaster Rovers performance at Peterborough
Goals from Alfie May and Isaac Hutchinson helped Doncaster Rovers secure a 2-0 victory away to Peterborough United
Doncaster Rovers ended their wait for a League One victory by beating Peterborough United 2-0 at the Weston Homes Stadium.
Grant McCann’s side opened the scoring after just 15 minutes when Alfie May finished from close distance after getting on the end of an excellent cross by winger Leon Ayinde. Rovers largely dictated the midfield battle in the first half and frustrated the hosts as they pushed to try and double the lead before the interval.
The momentum switched slightly during the second half of the contest as Peterborough grew into the contest and started getting in behind the backline more frequently. However, the Rovers backline remained resolute producing plenty of clearances and blocks in a game where they were ultimately able to stop Luke Williams’ side from registering a single shot on target.
Rovers have had their fair share of difficult luck during the early months of the season, but any fears of the team dropping points were put to bed when midfielder Isaac Hutchinson came off the bench to clinch the victory with a cooly taken goal from close distance.
Here’s what McCann had to say about Rovers’ performance in a key victory in the context of this campaign.
Everything Grant McCann said about Doncaster Rovers performance at Peterborough United
“We defended really well, looked strong. Our defence was really good against them, we were able to limit them to no shots at our goal, I don’t know if Tommy Simkin had a save in there, maybe some shots from distance, but in general we defended really well and never felt in danger.
“And we scored two excellent goals. The first is a great goal from there’s some excellent play from Leon and a lovely weighted ball to find Alfie. And the second one again an excellent bit of play from Jordan to find Isaac and he takes the goal well.
“So it’s a perfect away performance, three points and a clean sheet. I couldn’t have asked for much more.
“And that was the remit. We know we have a bit of a break after this and it’s important we send our fans home happy and with three points.”
