“I’m really looking forward to the challenge and I appreciate the opportunity. I’m looking forward to getting to work.

“This is a new challenge and one I’m ready to give my all to in order to make it a success.

“I’m a Doncaster lad. I’m from the area so I know this place well. I know the supporters. I know what the ambitions of the club are.

“It seemed a really good fit for me and one I really think can work.”

Rovers sacked Gary McSheffrey after 11 months in charge on Monday amid ‘growing concern over the standard of performances in matches and a lack of progress between games.’

Doncaster are currently twelfth in League Two, three points off three teams inside the play-offs with 96 points still to play for.

Schofield, 42, began the season in charge of last season’s beaten Championship play-off finalists after replacing Carlos Corberán, having previously managed the club’s B team and coached their under-19s.

But his reign lasted just 69 days before he was axed after one win from nine matches with Huddersfield second from bottom.

A highly rated coach and veteran of almost 500 games as a player, Schofield turned down the chance to become head coach of a club in Belgium’s top flight this summer.

Before joining Huddersfield in 2020 he worked as a youth coach at Barnsley, Leeds United and Middlesbrough.

Schofield also served as player coach at National League North side Bradford (Park Avenue) from 2015 to 2016.

The former midfielder represented the Terriers almost 250 times as a player and also played in the EFL for Millwall, Rotherham United and Yeovil Town.

Schofield’s Huddersfield were beaten 1-0 by Doncaster Rovers in a pre-season friendly at the Eco-Power Stadium in July.

His only win in charge was a 3-1 win over Stoke City in August.
