UPDATED: Ferguson confident Sunderland's Lynden Gooch will be a loan star for Doncaster Rovers

Ferguson has been tracking the 20-year-old American forward for some time and this week was finally given the green light to bring him to the Keepmoat on loan.

And he is confident of continuing the club's recent hot streak with loan signings.

"He comes with the good reputation from those at Sunderland and Kevin Ball, who I know well, doesn't suffer fools gladly," Ferguson said.

"Kevin wouldn't have anyone with a bad attitude up there so we know we're going to get the work ethic out of him.

"That's an important thing for us."

Gooch has netted five goals and made three assists in ten matches for Sunderland's U21 side this season.

He made his full senior debut earlier this season, coming off the bench in the Capital One Cup clash with Exeter City. Gooch was also among the substitutes for the Premier League clash with Aston Villa.

Ferguson has been looking for a versatile forward since former loanee Keshi Anderson was injured in late November.

Ferguson said: "Lynden is a striker who can play anywhere across the front.

"He can play off both feet, he's got good pace.

"We think he's going to be a good addition for us."

"He's been on the radar for a while now. We enquired a while ago but I think he was with Sunderland's first team.

"We enquired again and they were quite keen on him coming to us.

"We're delighted to get him in. It's a position I've been looking to fill and given the injured we got against Gillingham, I felt the need to do it."

Rovers will be without Cameron Stewart, Harry Middleton and Andy Butler for this weekend's trip to Fleetwood Town while Nathan Tyson remains a major doubt.

Though he arrived at the Stadium of Light from California, Gooch also holds a British passport. He was invited for a trial by Sunderland after impressing at high school level in the US.

Gooch joined Gateshead on loan in February last season, scoring once.
