Council applies to install new approach lighting at Doncaster Sheffield Airport
New lighting will be ‘the latest technology’, airport bosses have said.
The City of Doncaster Council has applied for planning permission to install approach lights at Doncaster Sheffield Airport.
Officials behind the reopening of the airport continue to push forward, after it was revealed that the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) are set to purchase the site from the Peel Group.
Simon Hinchley, executive director for airport operations at Fly Doncaster Ltd, said: “Reinstalling approach lighting is another important step towards the operational readiness of this airport.
“Approach lighting has been in place at this location for at least 40 years, previously in its guise as RAF Finningley and latterly to support air movements at Doncaster Sheffield Airport from 2005 to 2022.”
The airport said that while lights will be in the same location as before, ‘the latest technology will be used to ensure the resilience of the infrastructure’.
Mr Hinchley added: “The approach lights represent an important further step in the reopening of this airport and we’re pleased to have been working with our expert consultant team to ensure all aspects of aircraft infrastructure are in place.

“In the coming months we will also be carrying out work on the runway lights themselves, to ensure we are in a good position to welcome flights back and manage the airfield in a safe and responsible manner, conforming to all regulatory guidance.”
The application to re-install approach lights was submitted to the local planning authority on October 16, 2026.
Whilst the applicant and local planning authority are both the City of Doncaster Council, planning is a separate, quasi-judicial function with the authority’s own applications facing the same processes as those from third parties.
