Doncaster hospice patients receive comfort boost thanks to Nationwide grant
St John's Hospice in Doncaster has received an £8,252 grant from Nationwide Building Society, earmarked for specialist equipment designed to enhance comfort and dignity for patients receiving end-of-life care.
Patients at St John’s Hospice in Doncaster are set to benefit from a significant boost to their comfort and quality of life, following an £8,252 grant from Nationwide Building Society. The funding will provide specialist equipment crucial for individuals receiving end-of-life care. The donation, secured through Nationwide’s Colleague Grant programme, was inspired by the care provided to Nationwide employee Max Hudson’s grandad, Norman. Max and his colleagues have a history of supporting the hospice through volunteering and fundraising, with this being their second substantial grant; a previous donation exceeding £10,000 contributed to the refurbishment of the hospice café. This year’s grant will specifically fund two advanced hybrid pressure care mattresses, complete with pumps, and a tilt-in-space wheelchair. These items are designed to offer enhanced comfort and support, particularly for patients with complex care needs. The specialist mattresses will play a vital role in protecting vulnerable skin, alleviating discomfort and promoting overall wellbeing. The tilt-in-space wheelchair offers patients who would otherwise be bed-bound the opportunity to spend time with loved ones, explore different areas of the hospice, and experience a change of scenery. Carrie Gascoigne, Mortgage Adviser at Nationwide Building Society, expressed her delight: “We’re delighted to have secured this funding through Nationwide’s Colleague Grant programme.” Jenny Baynham, Fundraising Manager for St John’s Hospice, highlighted the impact: “Small things can make a huge difference, and this support will help us provide those moments when they matter most.” St John’s Hospice, part of Rotherham Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust, provides specialist palliative and end-of-life care across Doncaster and the surrounding areas, relying on charitable donations to enhance its services and facilities.
