12 Days of Christmas song rewritten with Doncaster area village lyrics

The festive favourite has been relaunched - with a distinctly local twist

Festive musical favourite The 12 Days of Christmas has been rewritten and relaunched - with fun lyrics reflecting life in a Doncaster area village.

From tractors shining and barrows racing to village pubs and three wheelie bins, volunteers at Belton Park Pavilion have created a Christmas singalong celebrating village life, local humour and the joy of bringing people together.

The group of volunteers in the North Lincolnshire village are hoping to spread a little Christmas cheer with their own local adaptation of one of the nation’s best-loved festive songs.

Twelve Nights of Christmas — Belton Shared With Me takes the familiar Twelve Days of Christmas and gives it a distinctly Belton flavour, celebrating everything from farmers and illuminated tractors to church bells, village pubs and the much-loved Belton Barrow Race.

And there’s even a mention of three wheelie bins!

The project has been developed by volunteers at Belton Park Pavilion, with the aim of bringing families, friends and neighbours together through music and perhaps creating a festive singalong that can be enjoyed for years to come.

The lyrics were led by Pavilion volunteer Zoe Temperton, with support from fellow volunteers, and feature twelve references to village life and the surrounding community.

Instead of five gold rings, there’s five church bells, while other verses celebrate ten tractors shining, eleven farmers ploughing and twelve Lights of Love.

The recording is becoming a community effort too.

Before the song is shared on social media, contributors including volunteers from the Trolleybus Museum, local Young Farmers, village pubs and people involved in the Belton Barrow Race are recording their own lines, bringing the local references to life.

Organisers hope the song will be enjoyed by children at Belton Primary School, families attending The Crown Inn’s Christmas carol night and visitors gathering around the Christmas tree at the Pavilion’s Christmas Market and Lights of Love event on Saturday 28 November.

The song will be shared free of charge, with everyone encouraged to learn the words and join in.

The song has also inspired a colourful festive project featuring Lumi and Friends, the cheerful Christmas gonk characters who have been appearing throughout the Pavilion’s Christmas Market countdown.

The characters now take centre stage in the song’s artwork, alongside a specially illustrated children’s colouring book and a collection of Christmas keepsake ornaments.

Both the colouring book and ornaments were ideas developed by Zoe, with proceeds from their sale helping support the volunteer-run Belton Park Pavilion.

The project brings together music, illustration, creativity and fundraising, all with a distinctly local feel.

Anthony Temperton, Chairman of Belton Park Pavilion, said: “Christmas is such a special time for bringing people together, and there’s something lovely about the idea of families, friends and neighbours standing around a Christmas tree singing together.

“Zoe and our volunteers have put so much enthusiasm and creativity into this. What started as a bit of festive fun has grown into something rather special. We wanted to create something that celebrates Belton, make people smile and hopefully get everyone joining in.”
