Virtual carol service filmed in Doncaster church hopes to bring festive cheer

St Peter’s Church in Old Edlington is the venue for a candlelit carol service which will be streamed on Facebook rather than people attending in person.

Edlington Town Council have worked in collaboration with singer Lottie Simone to bring festive cheer to people across the town who can watch her sing carols and Christmas songs inside the church.

Lottie, aged 17, said: “I’m quite sad that I can’t sing for people live this year but I think this is a nice alternative.

“I’m really looking forward to doing it and helping to spread a little joy and give back to the community.

“I think we all need it right now.

“My grandma is in hospital with Covid-19 at the moment so I understand what people are going through.”

Lottie will sing a selection of carols and festive tunes standing on the altar of St Peter's Church surrounded by candles.

Even though the event is being filmed in Edlington the organisers are hopeful that people across Doncaster will tune in to spread some Christmas cheer.

“I love Christmas and it’s sad that it won’t be the same this year,” she said.

“During lockdown music got me through and I think this will help get people into the Christmas spirit.”

Councillor Steve Reardon usually organises the annual carol service in Edlington.

He said: “We usually get around 50 to 100 people attending the service so I think the online version will go down well.

“I’ve seen a snippet of the concert and it looks lovely.

“The church is historic and has a nice ambience.”

In previous years the Salvation Army performs in the church and attendees help raise money for the charity.

This year Lottie will be accompanied virtually by Edlington school children and even a few special performances from town figures.

Lottie was filmed singing on Sunday, December 13 in the church and the video will be released online on Monday, December 14 at 6.30pm.
