Doncaster dinosaur expert told to 'get a real job' returns to inspire local pupils
World-renowned ichthyosaur expert Dr Dean Lomax is teaming up with the National Literacy Trust to share his journey from Balby to global scientific acclaim.
Children across Doncaster are set to take part in an inspiring event as part of the National Year of Reading, when internationally renowned palaeontologist Dr Dean Lomax joins the National Literacy Trust for a virtual gathering on Thursday, 12 November.
Dr Lomax, who grew up in Balby, Doncaster, has earned global recognition as a scientist, author and television presenter, specialising in prehistoric marine reptiles called ichthyosaurs. However, it is his determination to succeed despite early educational obstacles that makes his story particularly powerful for young people.
After being told during his school years that he would never become a palaeontologist, Dr Lomax chose to pursue his passion independently. Teaching himself through reading and practical experience, he travelled to the United States at just 18 to participate in dinosaur excavations. Today, he holds a PhD, has discovered new prehistoric species, and shares his expertise worldwide, both in publications and on television.
His journey underlines a key message for children: following your interests and working hard can lead to remarkable achievements, even if your path is unconventional. The upcoming event aims to show young people how reading can spark curiosity and help them pursue their dreams.
Reflecting on his experience, Dr Lomax said: "Growing up in Balby, Doncaster, there were few opportunities for a would-be palaeontologist. I was told time and again that I would never become a palaeontologist, and once even told to 'stop playing with dinosaurs and get a real job!' I like to think my career proves that anyone, especially someone from Doncaster, is capable of achieving whatever they set their mind to, even in the face of great adversity. Never let anyone define who you are. With passion, perseverance and a lot of hard work, it is possible to achieve your dreams."
During the first half of the National Year of Reading 2026, more than 1,000 Doncaster residents shared their interests, with dinosaurs featuring prominently. The National Literacy Trust’s research highlights the importance of making reading meaningful and relevant in young people’s lives.
Schools and home educators are invited to join the virtual event at 9:30am, Thursday, 12 November, which includes an interactive quiz and the chance to ask questions directly to Dr Lomax. Balby Central Academy, Dr Lomax’s former primary school, will also participate live.
