Joe Dodoo touches a ball forward into the path of Tiago Cukur who powers to the edge of the area, cuts back to beat his man and sends a low shot on goal. It goes wide, looking as though it came off the fingers of the goalkeeper but the referee gives a goal kick.

Jordy Hiwula receives a pass inside from Tommy Rowe, takes a touch to set himself but fires straight at Jamie Cumming from the edge of the box.

Kyle Knoyle picks up the ball in space on half way and gallops forward, and keeps going. Eventually he reaches the edge of the area and shoots left footed but it’s a tame effort straight at the keeper.

Ethan Galbraith curls a first time ball straight onto the side of the face of the referee who takes a tumble.

Galbraith gets the game back underway and hits the referee’s boot with his pass so we start again.

8.50pm Back underway

Rovers get the second half underway

Decent from Rovers, without the goal

Away from home, against a robust and well organised opposition, that’s a decent half of football from Rovers - apart from the fact they should be ahead.

They’ve had much the better of the attacking play and varied their approach in their attempts to unlock Gillingham. They’ve gone direct, into the channels, and played some intricate short passing with good running off the ball.

What has let them down has been the final ball on occasion - or the execution of the effort. Kyle Knoyle should have scored early but hit the sidenetting while Joe Dodoo fired over late in the half from an excellent position.

Rovers have defended well too and kept quiet Gillingham’s powerhouse forwards Vadaine Oliver and John Akinde.

But Gillingham have shown their threat with a pair of speculative efforts - McKenzie’s header from the edge of the box and Dempsey’s piledriver - to fire warning shots that they are only a moment away from taking the lead.

8.32pm That’s the break

And it’s goalless at half time

Kyle Dempsey smashes a shot from 20 yards that flies past the far post.

Joe Dodoo brings down a ball forward and releases Jordy Hiwula on the left. He works space to get the ball across and back to Dodoo who eventually gets the shot away and it deflects into the keeper’s hands.
