Memories have brought Alfie May 'home' to Doncaster Rovers

Alfie May has put a difficult season at Huddersfield Town behind him with a move to a club that holds happier memories.

The 32-year-old striker is back for a second spell at Doncaster Rovers, where his professional career began, linking up once more with manager Grant McCann.

He has joined on a season-long loan after the Terriers signed former Barnsley, Middlesbrough and Sheffield Wednesday man Ashley Fletcher to solve their problems at centre-forward.

"When my agent contacted me about coming back, (I told him) I want to do it and I want to do it quickly," revealed May.

"Coming back feels like home, it's a club that means a lot to me.

"They took me out of non-league and put me on a pathway and I never looked back."

May has a proven record of goals and promotions in League One but his debut Town campaign yielded just seven goals from 29 starts and 11 substitute appearances – his worst return since his first full season with Rovers.

McCann, who struggled to coax league goals from his centre-forwards last term, thinks he can get the best out of the 32-year-old again.

“It’s a really good signing for us, someone who knows League One really well,” he commented. "His goals over the last five years have been absolutely outstanding."

Since stepping up from non-league Bromley in 2017, May has 114 league goals.

Terriers sporting director Chris Markham called it a deal in “the best interests of all involved.

"Both Alfie and Doncaster’s appetite to see an agreement reached was made clear early on, and the terms of the loan are in line with our expectations.

“Giving both Alfie and the club some clarity early in the summer now allows us greater flexibility in the remainder of the window.”
