‘Very unlikely’ - What Grant McCann said about Glen Middleton’s future and potential Doncaster Rovers incomings

Grant McCann’s latest comments on possible incomings and the future of Glen Middleton

Doncaster Rovers boss Grant McCann says there’s a possibility that one or two arrivals will join the group before the window closes.

McCann has brought in 10 new signings to the football club over the course of the summer, with the most recent of those being Aston Villa loanee Tommi O’Reilly following his hugely productive loan spell at Crewe Alexander last term.

The Rovers manager has made a point of trying to do business early and says that on the whole he’s pleased with the group he has.

On the topic of signings, McCann said: “Yeah, I mean, look we’re trying to do one more. Maybe two, but we’ll see. We’ll definitely try to bring in another player. I think we’re quite close on that.”

McCann also made it clear that he doesn’t see any outgoings taking place with the exception of winger Glen Middleton. The Scottish footballer played 46 times across all competitions last season registering one goal and six assists. However, he struggled to establish himself as a first team regular in the league.

The Rovers boss added: “I'm pleased with the group that we have. No one will be leaving, so what you see here is what we have. Obviously, look, the only one probably will leave will be Glenn. I think we spoke about that before. So we're waiting to see when that happens.”

McCann has been clear on Middleton’s future throughout the summer. At the start of the month, he said: “I think for both parties it's probably best he goes and plays. His agent is aware of that. I think we're just waiting to see where he picks and what club he goes to."

However, as things stand nothing has currently been confirmed in terms of Middleton’s future and where he’ll be playing his football this season.

The former Rangers man raised a few eyebrows when he featured in pre-season against Wolves in late July, but there’s a low chance of him being involved again in a competitive match for the team.

When asked about Middleton’s chances of being reintegrated into the group if he does stay, McCann said: “No, because we've replaced him. So where we are at this moment in time, we feel like we've got five really good wide players. So it'd be very unlikely for Glenn to play in our team from this point onwards. So that's where we are.”
