‘Embarrassing’ - Owen Bailey on Doncaster Rovers capitulation against MK Dons in damaging 6-1 loss

Owen Bailey expressed his disappointment after a horrific 6-1 loss at MK Dons

Doncaster Rovers club captain Owen Bailey said he is feeling just about every negative emotion after his side’s hugely disappointing 6-1 loss away at MK Dons.

Bailey, who experienced the highs of scoring a brace against Sheffield Wednesday just a week earlier, was part of a team which endured a miserable afternoon in Milton Keynes, struggling to recover after falling behind inside the opening two minutes before conceding a second goal to leave themselves with a mountain to climb.

There was a brief spell of encouragement at the beginning of the second half, with Rovers showing signs of getting back into the contest through a Jordan Thomas goal.

But any momentum was quickly killed by two further goals by Aaron Collins before Callum Patterson and Marvin Ekpiteta scored to pile further misery on the travelling supporters.

"Embarrassing, really kind of embarrassed by the whole thing,” said Bailey.

"Not good enough from anyone today and we've got to take full accountability and look inward because that's not good enough. We got back into the game, looked like we were probably going to go on and get something," he said.

"Then they score and we just totally capitulate, which is tough to put into words, to be honest. It's just so embarrassing, really frustrating, angry. Every kind of negative emotion you can imagine is going on for everyone there."

Grant McCann speaking after the game was keen to shoulder most of the blame for the scoreline, but Bailey said that himself and the players need to be accountable.

He added: "We didn't get close enough to anyone. We didn't compete enough. We didn't move enough for the ball. We didn't retain the ball. Set plays were a shambles. Just everything that could have been wrong was wrong.

"So, yeah, that just can't happen again, basically. Ultimately, we get tasked with the job and I wouldn't say any of us have done our job today at all," he said.

"Just nowhere near good enough to a man, really."

Bailey as captain also explained that he’ll be leading the conversations in the debrief about what went wrong against MK Dons.

He added: “I’ll be leading the chats as captain and helping as much as I can. But I’m a part of it, it doesn’t give me any right to be different, everyone's accountable today and we’ve got to be better.”
