Grant McCann on Alfie May’s whirlwind 24 hours as striker fires Doncaster Rovers to victory

Doncaster Rovers manager Grant McCann says that he was amazed to even have Alfie May at his disposal after his side’s crucial 2-0 over Peterborough United.

The 33-year-old striker found the net at the Weston Homes Stadium with a cooly taken finish after 15 minutes, scoring just hours after celebrating the birth of his fourth child.

May played a huge role in the team’s victory making a series of excellent runs throughout the game and also tracking back to win the ball for his team on several occasions. He linked up well with the likes of Brandon Hanlan and Leon Ayinde in a display which served as a welcome reminder to fans about just how much the striker can offer the team after prolific spells in this division at the likes of Cheltenham Town, Charlton and Birmingham City in recent years.

It was perhaps the striker’s best performance since returning to DN4 and incredibly it came on the back of what would have likely been an entirely sleepless night based on what was happening off the pitch for the Gravesend-born forward.

“Alfie's had a whirlwind 24 hours,” said Grant McCann when commenting on the decision to substitute the talented forward after an hour against Peterborough.

“His wife gave birth to another little boy, that's four boys now, in the middle of the night last night. I'm just amazed that he's even here.

“We didn't think we were going to have him, but when he phoned up this morning and said I'll be there, his wife's still in hospital bless her, so she gave birth this morning at half four, five o'clock I think, so he's had no sleep.

“He was running on adrenaline in there already for 50, 60 minutes, so I'm pleased he's scored and he can celebrate with his little boy later.”
