Penalty controversy, a lack of intensity and a special moment: Doncaster Rovers talking points from Luton loss

Doncaster Rovers were beaten 3-1 by Luton Town at Kenilworth Road

Doncaster Rovers suffered their sixth league defeat of the league campaign in a challenging away match against a Luton team that many would expect to be in the promotion picture in six months time.

The Hatters took the lead on the stroke of half-time through a Callum Marshall penalty before doubling and later tripling their advantage in the second half through an excellent brace from talented Northern Ireland international Jamie Donley.

At that point it would have been easy for things to unravel, but the visitors did show a bit of resolve with substitute Bayley McCann scoring a late consolation to give the travelling supporters something to cheer about.

Here are the main talking points to emerge from a difficult night at Kenilworth Road as Rovers fell to a 3-1 loss.

Penalty controversy

Doncaster Rovers held their own for the first half an hour or so in Bedfordshire, with Grant McCann’s side and Jack Wilshere’s team both having opportunities to score.

Rovers squandered a key opportunity when Neill Byrne headed over from close range and also called the goalkeeper into action with a routined save after a header from Will Keane.

The Hatters had moments as well and largely controlled the possession as Simkin came off his line to stop Nakhi Wells from getting through on goal, while also pulling off a nice save to deny Kal Naismith after his deflected effort.

As the half drawed to a close there was the sense that the hosts were upping the ante, and they got their breakthrough through a cooly taken penalty from Callum Marshall.

However, it’d be safe to say that Grant McCann didn’t agree with the referee’s decision, with the Rovers boss claiming that Kasey Palmer took a dive in the penalty area after gliding past Jamie Sterry.

“Palmer dives in the box and the referee gives a penalty. There’s no point sugarcoating it. That’s what happened.

“Really disappointing that we’ve been undone on that, particularly coming away from home.”

Subsequent replays did show that Sterry tugged slightly on the shirt of Palmer. It probably wasn’t enough to bring the winger down but in the world of modern football, wingers are taught to make the most of the slightest bit of contact, which in the end is what led to the decision being given.

A lack of intensity in the second half

For large stages of the second half, there was only one side that really looked like scoring with Jamie Donley dictating the midfield battle and Luton enjoying the lion share of possession.

Donley, who was the star of the show for the hosts netted a brace, while Palmer, who was a real handful for Sterry continued to cause the former Newcastle United man problems.

One of the few bright sparks was the performance of Jack Senior, who showed great desire at both ends of the pitch, you wouldn’t think he’d recently returned from injury.

A special moment for Bayley McCann

Bayley McCann was introduced as a late substitute for the final 20 minutes and marked the occasion with his first ever goal in the Football League after a well-taken looping header over James Shea.

“I think he started the season really well,” said father and manager Grant McCann.

“He had a strong pre-season. He's been effective when he's been playing whether that's starting or coming off the bench.

“He's been effective in games. That's all you can ask of the lads.”

Bayley added in his post-match interview: “Well, you've just got to learn that no matter if you're starting or on the bench, you can affect the game. And also that we need to regroup, get together and go again Saturday for MK Dons away.”
