Schofield met the press for the first time this morning after being unveiled as Doncaster’s new boss on a one-year rolling contract yesterday, just 36 days after his Huddersfield Town departure.

Rovers dispensed with Gary McSheffrey on Monday, with the club’s board citing their disappointment their wishes for a particular style of play and overall identity had not come to fruition during his 11-month tenure.

Discussing his preferred brand of football, Schofield said: “I want us to play with a high intensity. We need to get to that level where the physical levels of the players can compete.

"I’m a coach who wants to dominate possession of the ball, but to progress, to attack, not just keep the ball and circulate.”

Defensive solidity is also important, Schofield said.

He added: "It’s an an aggressive style of play, we want to be attacking, creating chances.

"The work will be on the training pitch to implement these messages and and that will result in us seeing that on the pitch.”

Asked how long it might take before Rovers fans see such an approach in full flow, Schofield said: "The key is to implement it as quick as possible.

"It can take time, it’s a process.

"I think that’s down to the communication skills of me as a manager and down to my staff and the players being responsive to it.

"Certain players can take things on board, more messages, than others. Others you have to be more simple with.”

Quoting Albert Einstein, Schofield added: "That’s my strategy. In my journey I have learnt that simplicity is genius.”

Fans should, therefore, not expect any major changes when Rovers take on Crewe Alexandra tomorrow in Schofield’s first game in charge after two training sessions.

He said: “I’ve utilised the staff that are already in place. I think Chad (Green), Greeny (Paul Green) and Benno (Ian Bennett) took the sessions on Monday and Tuesday.

"I’ve come in and implemented certain things yesterday. It’s getting simple messages across, what we are going to do in possession, out of possession, without changing anything drastically.

"With two days to prepare for a game it’s very difficult to implement my full style.”
