This retro photo gallery takes you back up to half a century, showing some of the most popular nightspots around the county back then.
The fondly remembered nightclubs pictured include one which was reputedly the biggest in Europe when it opened, another that was known for its hypnotic laser shows and 10p pints, and a third launched by one of Britain’s most flamboyant businessmen.
Between them, they hosted some of the biggest bands and singers of the 70s and 80s, including Kylie, David Bowie, Fleetwood Mac, U2 and the Sex Pistols.
These nostalgic pictures will take you back to the glory days of these much-loved nightclubs, including one described as an ‘oasis’ for ‘wining, dining and dancing’, another known as ‘the place to be seen’ and a third said to be the ‘best discotheque around’.
Do you remember these nightclubs, and do these photos bring back any happy memories of nights out there during the 70s and 80s?

Today home to the O2 Academy, this landmark building on Sheffield's Arundel Gate entertained a generation of clubbers during the 1970s and 80s as the Roxy Disco, or simply the Roxy. The club, laid out over two floors, with a large stage on the ground floor, was visited by Pete Waterman and Michaela Strachan for their popular TV show Hitman and Her in the 80s and 90s, and attracted some big names, including Kylie Minogue, pictured here in October 1989. Other incarnations over the years include Top Rank and Steelys, and it also had a brief spell as St Thomas’s Church. | Sheffield Newspapers
