The 80s may have been a tough period for many in the UK, with the miners’ strike, high unemployment, and the Falklands War.
But it was an exciting time to be alive, and it is little wonder many people look back upon the 80s as the best decade in living memory.
This retro picture gallery helps make that case, showcasing our favourite things about the 80s, from fashion and film to music and TV - like a mix tape, only in photo form.
What were your favourite things about the 80s, and how do you think they compared to the 60s, 70s, 90s and noughties?

9. Cabbage Patch Kids
Cabbage Patch Kids were one of the must-have toys of the 1980s. The odd-looking dolls with soft cloth bodies and hard plastic heads flew off the shelves. How many people remember the bizarre back story invented to help sell them, which involved a villian called Lavender McDade attempting to abduct the dolls and force them to work in her gold mines? | Getty Images Photo: Len Trievnor/Daily Express/Hulton Archive/Getty Images

10. The football
The 80s produced numerous sporting stars but none shone quite as brightly as the pint-sized Argentinian maestro Diego Maradona. For all the debate today about who is the GOAT out of Leo Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, anyone who was privileged enough to watch Maradona floating his way around the pitch during his pomp in the 80s, when attacking players didn't enjoy the protection they do today, knows they were truly blessed to witness his incomparable talent. | Hulton Archive Photo: Allsport/Getty Images/Hulton Archive

11. The blockbusters
The 1980s gave us many classic blockbusters, and the director Steven Spielberg was responsible for two of the biggest in E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. He was also an executive producer for a number of other classic 80s films, including Back to the Future, Gremlins, and Who Framed Roger Rabbit. | Getty Images Photo: Getty Images

12. The sporting villains
Federer, Nadal, Djokovic and now Sinner and Alcaraz have taken tennis to new levels, but for all their brilliance the sport today lacks a certain edge compared with the 1980s. That's down to the absence of bad boys like John McEnroe and Jimmy Connors from the top level. They were both undeniably great players but were known as much for their on-court outbursts as their stunning ability. The pantomime villainy peaked with McEnroe's Wimbledon meltdown in 1981, when he yelled that infamous line 'you cannot be serious'. Unlike some players, McEnroe's anger management issues didn't stop him having a stellar career, which included seven Grand Slam singles titles. | Getty Images Photo: Rob Taggart/Central Press/Hulton Archive/Getty Images
