Shot by Vikki Force, the clip comes after people began speculating about the nature of the ‘meteors’ which were seen all over Doncaster.

Aliens, space rockets and weather balloons have all been put forward – but the most likely explanation is that it was distant aircraft, with early morning sunlight illuminating its vapour trail.

One said: “I saw this and wondered what it was. I was driving so could not take a picture.”

Another posted: “My house looks towards Bentley and beyond so had a great view. There were two bright spots towards the end of the smoke trail.”

Another added: “I’ve seen a comet and its similar.”

But plenty of aircraft enthusiasts said the picture simply showed a plane taking off.

One said: “It's a plane taking off from one of the other airports, possibly Manchester, Leeds or Humberside with the sunrise reflecting on its vapour trail.”

Another wrote: “It looks like this is a380 from Dubai to New York. I take these types of photos all the time nothing strange going off with that photo.”

Others joked it was ailing PM Liz Truss being blasted into space or making another U-turn on one of her policies.
