Video: Stunning Kevin Keegan mural unveiled in Doncaster village where he was born
The mural was created by a local artist
A stunning mural of Doncaster football legend Kevin Keegan has been unveiled in the village where he was born.
Created by local artist Craig Fives, also known as Mural Wizard, the painting showing Keegan in his 1970s playing heyday as well as his later managerial career has been unveiled at Armthorpe Welfare.
Keegan, who died last week at the age of 75 after a cancer battle, was born at nearby 32 Elm Place in Armthorpe and went on to enjoy a glittering career as one of England’s greatest ever players.
An Armthorpe Welfare spokesperson said: “The striking mural pays tribute to Keegan's remarkable football journey, which began in the village before he rose to become one of the most recognised and respected figures in world football.
“The artwork has been designed to celebrate both his outstanding achievements on the pitch and his enduring connection to the community where his story started.”
Born in Armthorpe in 1951, Keegan's career saw him progress from Scunthorpe United to Liverpool, where he won multiple league titles, an FA Cup, two UEFA Cups and the European Cup.
He later enjoyed tremendous success with Hamburg SV in Germany, becoming one of the few English players to win the prestigious Ballon d'Or twice, in 1978 and 1979.
He also captained England, earning 63 international caps, before later managing both Newcastle United and the England national team.
The mural serves as a powerful reminder that one of football's greatest careers began in the heart of Armthorpe and that talent, determination and ambition can take local youngsters to the very highest level of the game.
A spokesperson for Armthorpe Welfare FC said: "Kevin Keegan's achievements place him amongst the greatest footballers England has ever produced, but for us he will always be one of Armthorpe's own.
“We wanted to create a lasting tribute that celebrates not only his incredible career but also his roots in our village. Working with a talented local artist has allowed us to bring that vision to life and create something that the whole community can be proud of."
The project reflects the club's commitment to preserving and celebrating Armthorpe's sporting heritage while inspiring future generations of players. It is hoped the mural will become a focal point for residents, supporters, and visitors, helping to strengthen community pride and recognise the village's unique place in English football history.
