Second fleet of military helicopters seen in skies over Doncaster

It is the second major display over Doncaster in recent days

Doncaster has been treated to another display of military hardware - after a second military helicopter flypast in a matter of days.

Dozens of people have reported seeing and hearing a fleet of choppers flying over the city this afternoon (Monday).

Several AH-64 Apache attack helicopters were seen in the skies over parts of Doncaster earlier.

The helicopters are used all over the globe and it is understood the latest flypast was a group of miltary personnel on training exercises.

The aircraft have been used in a number of global conflicts, including Iran and Iraq, Kosovo and Afghanistan.

It comes days after a number of distinctive Chinook helicopters were seen over Doncaster.

The unusual looking aircraft is also distinguishable due to the 'thud thud' sound its huge rotor blades make as they slice through the air.

Four helicopters, operated by the Royal Netherlands Air and Space Force were spotted on manoeuvres last week en route from Cambridge to an unspecified location.

In service since 1962, the helicopter is operated by armed forces around the world.

It is understood that the Dutch aircraft were taking part in operational and training flights.

Meanwhile, Britain’s RAF uses the Chinook for trooping, resupply, and battlefield Casualty Evacuation (CASEVAC), and for carrying internal and/or underslung loads.

They can carry up to 55 troops (more, usually 24 to 40) and/or up to 10 tonnes of freight. A secondary role includes search and rescue.
