Rally attracts visitors from far and wide

Thankfully the sun shone, adding to the success of the event which attracted owners and visitors from far and wide, and ended at Sandtoft Trolleybus Museum.

Spokesman Ian Jones said: “The vehicle cavalcade through town certainly raised some eyebrows, as a procession of cars and lorries, some of which hadn’t been seen in Doncaster for many years, made their way down down Hallgate.

“The star attraction was ultimately the steam lorry which amused everybody with much hissing and billowing of steam and smoke as it stood at the lights by the Danum hotel. When the lights changed, the driver gave a brief toot on the whistle before moving off down Silver Street.”

He added: “At the museum itself, vintage buses, formerly owned local operators, including Doncaster Corporation transport dept, were well loaded as they took passengers on tours to Epworth and other destinations on the Isle of Axholme.”

The day culminated in a test run of newly restored Doncaster Trolleybus No 375 which is the only one of its type remaining. It has been restored externally by the Doncaster Omnibus & Light Railway Society, and was run to raise interest amongst visitors to the event, as further work is needed (to the interior) before it can be considered for front-line service at the museum.
