Doncaster Council to launch consultation on future of market after £20m Government investment

The City of Doncaster Council is to launch a consultation on the future of the Doncaster Markets, following a £20million investment in the city centre from the government.

This week, local residents, visitors, business owners and market traders will be asked for their views and opinions for the future of the markets and marketplace area.

Announcing the upcoming consultation to full council on November 27, 2025, Cllr James Church, cabinet member for planning, neighbourhoods and public health, said: “Over the past ten years, Doncaster Markets has already seen significant investment including renovation of the Wool Market and the Corn Exchange, with attention now focusing on how to deliver further improvements and the next phase of investment following today’s announcement on Community Regeneration Partnership funding.

“I regularly speak with market traders and earlier this month we held a specific engagement session to discuss this exciting next phase of investment.

“I know how passionate and committed our market traders are, but we must back them up with a sustainable, long-term vision that everybody can get behind and work together to develop a plan that has everybody pulling in the same direction.”

In the same meeting, Mayor Ros Jones announced Doncaster was to receive £20m from the Community Regeneration Partnership for the city centre, following a visit from Miatta Fahnbulleh MP, minister for devolution, faith and communities.

She told members £7m of that package would be used for the “next phase of investment” in Doncaster Markets.

Cllr Church urged all councillors to support the consultation, by both taking part and sharing it throughout their communities.

“I am hugely passionate about the future of our markets, and I believe the majority of people in Doncaster are too,” he said.

“Doncaster city centre is a key priority for this council, and Doncaster Markets will play a pivotal role in the vision to create a modern and thriving city centre,” he added.

The council plans for the consultation to go live on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, and will be available online, with some paper copies available at the Corn Exchange, where residents will be able to meet and discuss with council officers.
