Adorable puppy Harvey was subjected to the horrendous attacks, in which someone poured boiling hot tar over his head and back, while living in Eastern Europe where he was born last year.

Mayflower Animal Sanctuary in Bawtry, Doncaster, saw distressing photos of the mixed breed pooch coated in thick black tar, which is thought to have been taken from a building site then deliberately used as a weapon, and decided to do something about it.

The South Yorkshire animal sanctuary was able to raise over £3,000, not only to treat Harvey’s injuries, but to have him transported to the UK – where he can now ‘live life to the full’.

A Mayflower spokesman said: "We just had to help - you never cease to be moved by the plight of animals requiring assistance without which they would not survive.

"We worked together to ensure Harvey received the veterinary care he desperately required."

They added: "Amazingly Harvey’s health is now really good. He seems extremely happy and just like a typical puppy.

"He's full of life and a cheeky chappie, he's very curious and playful.

"We hope Harvey will find his happy ever after with people who will love him and give him the best opportunities and experiences in order to become a happy, well-balanced dog.

"We hope he lives life to the full."

Harvey was attacked with the tar in December and it stuck to his fur and skin, leaving him in agony and unable to move.

The substance also created toxic fumes which he had breathed in and caused damage to his lungs.

Harvey was rescued by a canine clinic in Romania after the incident, where vets bathed him and used special lubricants to remove the sticky tar without damaging his skin any further.

Once he was healthy enough, and after they had seen the distressing images online, Mayflower Animal Sanctuary worked with the clinic to have him transported to the UK after raising the funds needed.

Now, Harvey is back to his spritely self and is currently with a foster family, ready to be rehomed after lockdown.
