And Bawtry’s Mayflower Animal Sanctuary has been flooded with donations to pay for the animal’s care and bring the animal to the UK for treatment.

More than £3,000 has already poured in for the sanctuary which wants to bring the dog from Romania, where the attack took place.

The pup was found caked in bitumen before Christmas suffered burns to his skin as well as damage to his lungs.

Mayflower spokesman Lorraine Mills said: “This stray puppy was extremely thin due to malnutrition was already having a hard life.

“In this instance boiling tar has been “deliberately” thrown at this puppy, we believe acquired from nearby building sites. The tar has stuck to his fur and skin and caused extreme pain and the inability to move.

“The boiling tar has created toxic fumes which he has breathed in and affected his tiny lungs. Similar to smoke inhalation, he has required treatment for pneumonia.

“He will require a lot of bathing with special lubricants to gently remove the tar without damaging his skin further. He will require continued treatment for pneumonia for a while, good food and aftercare.

“We apologise should our photographs cause anyone distress but this is the reality of rescue and the sad reality of what can and does happen to dogs living on the streets.

“His treatment has started and he is responding well. We believe he will pull through and this sweet boy is still wagging his tail, despite the pain and the horrific cruelty he has endured.”

"We want to get him over here and we’re grateful for all the people who have donated so far for all the treatment and vet’s costs, vaccinations and travel costs that it will take to bring him to the UK. We want to put him on what we call our Happy Bus to bring him to us.”
